ALCDJ was founded with a vision to transform the development discourse, advocating for equitable practices and supporting marginalized communities across the continent.

The ALCDJ was founded to respond to the following key challenges:

The deficiencies in existing social and economic policies, and the ideas and research upon which they rest. These policies are unable to address the deep economic and social crises that manifest in extreme levels of poverty, inequality and unemployment and, subsequently, undermine democracy and democratic institutions.
The lack of coherent, viable economic alternatives and the failure of progressive social forces to organize a social consensus around such interventions.
The need to build capacity for policy-relevant development research that responds to the concerns of labour, community activism, civil society, and progressive politics thus developing research and policy which directly contributes towards leveraging social change. Particular under-researched policy areas were identified.
The lack of integration between development research and policy proposals, and progressive social forces that can utilize those to bring change.

Policy Development

ALCDJ promotes alternative policies aimed at redistributing resources equitably and fostering an inclusive society for all.

Resilient Youth

Facing unemployment and limited access to education, a group of youth engaged with ALCDJ. Through our programs, they received skills training and job placement support, resulting in increased employment rates and economic stability within their community.

Empowered Women

Women in a rural area faced systemic barriers to accessing resources. With ALCDJ’s support, they formed cooperatives, gained financial literacy, and achieved economic independence, transforming their lives and communities for the better.
